Why use qualitative methods? What kinds of questions can qualitative methods help you answer? How do you actually do rigorous and reflective qualitative research in the real world?

Written by a team of leading researchers associated with NatCen Social Research (the National Centre for Social Research) this textbook leads students and researchers through the entire process of qualitative research from beginning to end - moving through design, sampling, data collection, analysis and reporting.   In this fully revised second edition you will find:
  • A practical account of how to carry out qualitative research which recognises a range of current approaches and applications
  • A brand new chapter on ethics
  • A brand new chapter on observational research
  • Updated advice on using software when analysing your qualitative data
  • New case studies which illustrate issues you may encounter and how problems have been tackled by other researchers.
This book is an ideal guide for students, practitioners and researchers faced with the challenges of doing qualitative research in both applied and academic settings in messy real-life contexts.

Full of useful and informative chapters that take the students through the key stages within qualitative research. (Professor Margaret Hogg 2013-12-04)I think this is an excellent book - whenever students ask for advice on DOING qualitative research (rather than writing essays on it), I reach for this. (Dr Ben Baumberg 2013-12-04)An excellent primer for anyone who is new to qualitative research, and also a very useful reference book for people with more experience. excellent book for the novice and for the seasoned researcher, will certainly be recommending it. I'm completely new to qualitative research and it has helped me grasp the ideas behind it and more importantly helped me to apply those ideas

i've found this book good, but not so practical. other qualitative research books are more hands-on, this one it very theoretical. for instance, i have found it useful to prepare exams/dissertations, but not for real research worki would only recommend it for people that alreay has a bit of a basic knowledge on the topic, not for startersthe examples are ok, though

I would commend this book as an essential text for anyone who is new to the world of messy qualitative research, or for people who have been working in the field for many years but with little real rigour in what they do. The book is pitched perfectly and is accessible and readable, using consistent examples throughout the chapters to illustrate the points being made. It gives advice on the entire process involved in qualitative research, from research design through practical fieldwork tips to the analysis and write-up of the data.In large part, this is all done extremely well. The only downside to this book is that it is now slightly out of date, and as such, it doesn't take account of the IT advances we have seen in recent years. For example, the book takes something of a purist approach to analysis of qualitative data, based as it is upon the National Centre for Social Research's (NatCen) Framework Analysis approach which - at time of writing - was very much based upon constructing a paper-based index of coded transcripts. However, developments in programs like MS Excel and NVivo in recent years means that it is now possible to combine use the Framework Analysis approach as a guide for the coding/indexing stage of working with transcripts, before turning to NVivo and/or Excel as a hugely useful tool in retrieving/organising the coded sections electronically. That said, the book never claims to provide the last word in qualitative research methodology, but rather aims to disseminate the Framework Analysis gospel. This in itself is no bad thing, because the approach helps to bring structure and rigour to the daunting field of qualitative research, which for too long has been seen as lacking in credibility and objectivity. For people working in qualitative research, this book (along with Colin Robson's excellent "Real World Research") is incredibly helpful and instructive.

QUALitative research as a methodology, to a more QUANTitatively inclined novice (like myself), may seem from the outside, like a field of research that is somewhat less transparent and/or lacking in methodological rigor. However, this book clearly illustrates that there is an objective, systematically defined methodology and structure, albeit more artistic in nature, contained within this rather less structured field of research. It beautifully illustrates how this methodology embraces the "messy". It is where science combines with the creative arts, an intellectual collision of opposites, with the birth of information that is unique in its own right. So, what is qualitative research? How does one conduct interviews / focus groups? What does one do with the reams of transcribed interview material? How does one start analysing such data to create order and form? How is such data presented? This book will show you precisely how this is done....and a whole lot more! This outstanding book successfully provides a step-by-step guide on how to perform qualitative research, from start to finish, in a very systematic manner. The book will appeal to anyone who wants to know exactly what qualitative research in practice actually entails, be it undergraduate/postgraduate students or researchers alike.Notable qualities of the book include:(1) Clearly and methodically defines the stages of conducting qualitative research in practice, in a very clear and transparent manner. Its step-by-step approach, unfolds over 11 chapters, as follows:(1) The Foundations of Qualitative Research(2) The Application of Qualitative Methods to Social Research(3) Design Issues(4) Designing and Selecting Samples(5) Designing Fieldwork Strategies & Materials(6) In-Depth Interviews(7) Focus Groups(8) Analysis: Practice, Principles and Processes(9) Carrying out Qualitative Analysis(10) Generalising from Qualitative Research(11) Reporting and Presenting Qualitative DataThe book in its entirety is excellent, and each chapter follows a logical sequence, building upon the information imparted in the preceding chapters. However, as a novice, the analysis sections were extremely helpful in illustrating how the "rich" data obtained is then processed and analysed (a process that seemed shrouded in secrecy/mystery, prior to reading this text).(2) Written in a very user friendly and accessible format:(i) Good use of headings and subheading.(ii) Boxes with bullet points highlighting and emphasising salient points.(iii) Key points at the end of each chapter highlighting important concepts.(iv) Further reading at the end of each chapter.(v) The numerous case studies interspersed throughout the text are truly invaluable.(vi) Bullet points interspersed between the text to emphasise points.Clearly, the authors have tried to make this text accessible and user friendly to a wide audience, be it the novice or the seasoned researcher wanting to fine tune their skills.(3) All authors are current or past members of the 'National Centre for Social Research' in the 'Qualitative Research Unit'. Therefore, collectively they provide invaluable insight, from their own personal experiences and share their own top tips!(4) The book does covers 'Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software' [CAQDAS]. Hopefully, the information in this section will be updated in the forthcoming newer edition, in light of the more recent advances e.g. NVivo software. Nonetheless, being a purist and working intimately with the text, is no bad thing, particularly for a beginner.Overall, an excellent introduction on how to conduct qualitative research in practice. Highly recommend this book to anyone requiring clarity and specificity, in a helpful and insightful manner, regarding the qualitative research methodology.

This book will be useful to new and experienced qualitative researchers including those trying a new methodology within the qualitative field. It manages to draw together really practical guidance whilst highlighting the theoretical underpinning and pitfalls worth avoiding. Also written in a very readable style. I would strongly recommend this book.
